In the backdrop of water crisis and drought that hit almost 13
states across India, scientists in India have designed a system that can
make sea water potable and safe for use. This development will help to
produce 6.3 litres of water everyday.
The scientists have also developed a filtration method, which will make
ground water (high on Uranium and arsenic) safe for drinking purpose.
The plant has been set up by scientists of Bhabha Atomic Research
Centre (BARC) at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu. they (scientists) use waste
steam from a nuclear reactor to purify seawater. The filtered water also
tastes like fresh water.
According to reports, several plants have been set up by the BARC in
West Bengal, Punjab, Rajasthan to clean the contaminated water and to
make water fit for use at a low cost.
Meanwhile, scientists have also made several household filtration
system that are being marketed to all the drought-hit areas of
Maharashtra. The filtration system has some special membranes that make
water fit for use.
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also visited the BARC, where he
paddled a purifier, which can make water free from contamination.
Turning the paddle produces energy that is used by the purifying
system.
